Distribution & Logistics Management

Distribution Management follows the entire logistics process from the raw materials supplier to the point of sale, and provides the link between each part in the chain.

A Distribution or Logistics Manager has a varied job and can be involved in
stock, transportation or even the control of legislation, costing and environmental pressures. These responsibilities do vary depending on the specific role within Distribution Management, but in each role there is constant liaising between all parts of a supply chain. 

What does a Distribution or Logistics Management job description include?

  • A Distribution Manager or Logistics Manager must consistently monitor the quality and efficiency of goods storage and transportation.
  • The coordination of an order cycle and the efficient allocation of staff resources is the responsibility of the Distribution Manager who must decide any prioritisation according to data analysis of personnel performance.
  • A Distribution Manager based in warehouse or transport must implement health and safety standards whilst motivating and training a staff team, setting achievable objectives and managing any projects.
  • Senior Distribution Managers must effectively plan projects and use any specialist knowledge to contribute to consultancy services.
  • The Distribution Manager must plan and manage the movement of freight and coordinate with suppliers and distributers to ensure smooth transition.

Key skills and qualifications of a Distribution Manager:

  • You must be educated to degree level and may also be required to hold any relevant management qualifications relating to Distribution.A Distribution Manager may be required to understand a company’s operational systems and provide input for the development of future systems.
  • The Distribution Manager must have high level communication skills as their job focuses on the communication between different parties and ensuring good customer satisfaction.
  • Organisation is a key skill for the Distribution Manager as it is their responsibility to organise the entire Supply Chain and effectively communicate with department supervisors to ensure smooth operation.
  • The Distribution Manager also requires experience within the transportation and warehousing industry to monitor the flow of goods and understand the complex systems of inventories, delivery times, costs and personnel management.
  • You must be proficient in Microsoft Office and you may also be required to be familiar with industry specific computer programs.
