Expatriate taxation is possibly the most complex area of personal taxation because it involves the interaction of the tax system of two counties. To work as an Expatriate Tax Advisor requires someone who is fully conversant with taxation and familiar with working outside of the UK tax laws.

Spotting tax saving opportunities for clients is a skill and requires someone who not only has a grasp of tax laws and compliance regulations, but is creative in their approach to problem solving.  Working in Expatriate Tax at an early stage in your career, can provide you with opportunities to connect and develop client relationships and to be involved in the day to day delivery of management relationships across a broad range of issues outside of tax compliancy and advisory.

  • Depending upon the employer, the role of Expatriate Tax Advisor could involve internal and external secondments, which may include overseas assignments.
  • You will be required to develop and maintain tax relationships with clients ensuring that you deliver high levels of client service.
  • As an Expatriate Tax Advisor you may be expected to attend and liaise with a client’s external agents.
  • You will be part of a team who will actively assist in winning work by proactively managing existing clients and participate in the building and development of new clients.
  • Your principle role will be to ensure the delivery of maximum value for both the company and clients from the tax services delivered.
  • As an Expatriate Tax Advisor you will be required to manage risk appropriately for both the company and the client at all times.
  • Depending upon your position within the company, you may be required to manage staff, coach and motivate junior members and monitor staff performance.

Key skills and qualifications of an Expatriate Tax Advisor:

  • You will be educated to degree level and will have appropriate accountancy qualifications, which will be identified by the employer, or equivalent work experience.
  • Depending upon the position, you will need to be an experienced tax practitioner, but you may also be required to have had pervious experience in the specific area of Expatriate Tax.
  • It is important that you are commercially aware and can demonstrate your understanding of business strategy as well as knowledge of current tax compliancy and laws.
  • You will need to be an excellent communicator in a range of situations both written and oral as well as having excellent presentation skills.
  • As an Expatriate Tax Advisor you will be required to be able to engage critical thinking and analytical skills in your daily tasks.
  • Is it common to keep irregular hours in the role of an Expatriate Tax Advisor and so an enthusiastic and flexible attitude to working hours is desirable.
  • Knowledge of industry standard computer programs is required.
