Traffic Planner Job

A skilled and experienced Traffic Planner will analyse and interpret transportation data to devise plans and create predictions in order to avoid any congestion issues that may arise. The Traffic Planner will also design survey techniques and research methods in order to collect data that can be analysed to create traffic forecasts.

­­­­­ Traffic Planner Duties:

The role of a Traffic Planner will create model traffic flows in order to predict any congestion that may happen, and plan accordingly for this. As well as this responsibility, you can expect your duties to include the following:

  • Manage the fleet and the allocated budget for all proposed order.
  • Report to the Transport Manager if there is any absence from work of drivers and staff.
  • Direct drivers, advising them on all loading and unloading of consignments and goods.
  • Respect the law on road traffic and the traffic of goods.
  • Communicate with drivers, subcontractors, managers and key personnel, keeping them up to date with any changes that may need to be implemented.
  • Negotiate contracts where possible to reduce costs and achieve maximum efficiency.
  • Provide accurate routing information to ensure that delivery times and locations are coordinated effectively.
  • Accurately calculate supply costs for each individual movement or transaction.
  • Obtain quotes for transportation and also make cost comparisons where necessary.
  • Establish strong and positive relationships with clients in pursuit of sustainable business relationships.
  • Ensure compliance and understanding of all current legislations, regulations and procedures.
  • Assess the impact of any changes, such as building developments, and create plans on how to effectively avoid congestion.   

Key skills and qualifications of a Traffic Planner:

The following skills will be beneficial to a candidate looking to apply for this role:

  • General haulage and distribution experience is required.
  • experience is required.
  • Knowledge of road networks is required for this role.  
  • Experience with driving regulations for HGV, Working Time Directive, Driving Hours etc. is essential.
  • Experience in Route Planning and Scheduling is essential.
  • Experience in Transport Management systems is beneficial.
