Working as an ISM ISPS Auditor in Maritime presents great career opportunities. ISM (International Safety Management) and ISPS (International Ship and Port Facilities Security), are processes widely used in the Maritime sector.

Being an auditor is not the same as being an inspector. Auditing looks at how ships and shipping companies manage their quality, environment, security and safety. This requires the formulating of procedures, which have to be implemented within the organisation to ensure compliancy to set industry quality standards, ie ISO 9001. The purpose of imposing standards on the organisation is to ensure the company demonstrates the standard in everything it does and to help the company to continually improve as it moves forward, keeping pace with technology and best practice.

What does an ISM ISPS Auditor job description include?

  • As an ISM/ISPS Auditor you will be responsible for the overseeing and directing of all ship security internal audits.
  • You may be responsible for one ship or a fleet of ships depending upon your employer.
  • You may be responsible for the managing of other auditors depending upon the ISM ISPS audit job on offer.
  • An ISM ISPS auditor is expected to understand the requirements for accurate and efficient record keeping whilst carrying out daily duties such as identifying and reviewing existing procedures, and where necessary, putting in place preventative actions if required.
  • An audit job includes the assessment and appraisal of key business processes within the organisation, working with all levels of management. You will create and implement policies, which are for the benefit of the company.
  • The job of an Auditor is to plan audits, review and evaluate all audits performed and prepare a report detailing the results and recommendations of all audits carried out.
  • You will be required to attend and participate in internal audit meetings and reviews with other members of the company’s management team.

Key skills and qualifications of an ISM ISPS Auditor:

  • You should be educated to degree level and hold relevant auditor qualifications.
  • Ideally, you will have several years experience as an ISM ISPS Auditor.
  • You must be able to demonstrate good numeracy skills and be methodical in your approach to work and problem solving.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills are required to work successfully as an ISM ISPS Auditor.
  • You must have excellent negotiating skills and be able to work as part of a team as well as autonomously.
  • You must have good computer skills and be familiar with Microsoft Office as well as other software related to your particular industry sector.
