Offshore Technical Superintendent

An offshore job such as an Offshore Technical Superintendent is a key role within the crew, responsible for the maintenance of the vessel and the compliance of the vessel and crew with Health, Safety and Environmental policy.

The Offshore Technical Superintendent ultimately manages the vessel’s welfare, conducting any required repairs, over and under water, and ensuring that equipment and any watertight compartments are secure. As any offshore job suggests, an Offshore Technical Superintendent can work in a variety of marine settings, including rivers, lakes and open water, and may be required to work directly with the vessel or make use of ROVs for underwater work. The stability and seaworthiness of the vessel would be your responsibility, but the welfare of the crew is just as much a part of an Offshore Technical Superintendent’s job. You must ensure that all onboard incidents are reported and that records are thoroughly maintained.

What does an Offshore Technical Superintendent job description include?

  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must inspect, maintain and repair all vessels using diagnostic equipment. This includes navigational equipment, engines and any other equipment.
  • You must also work closely with engineers and other technicians when conducting repairs, estimating the cost and time required.
  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must ensure that the vessel is in line with any Health, Safety and Environmental policies, and that the crew also adhere to them.
  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must also look to improve on any HS & E policies.
  • You must perform detailed risk assessments and report any incidents and accidents onboard.
  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must maintain the security of all watertight compartments, ensuring that the stress induced on the vessel is kept to a minimum and that the vessel is seaworthy.
  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must also conduct quality control of the cargo, and make sure all cargo equipment is well maintained.
  • You must ensure that shift and crew changes are efficient and that all personnel and vessel records are well maintained.
  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must also work closely with other supervisors, including the Captain, to increase the cost and time efficiency of the vessel.

  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must have in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and apply in onboard the vessel.
  • The Offshore Technical Superintendent must be an effective communicator, able to communicate with colleagues of all ranks and also cultivate working relationships and minimise conflict in the workplace.
