Ships Operator

The Ships Operator is a technical management position within a shipping company. The role of the Ships Operator is to ensure that all technical tasks in relation to the operation of a vessel are performed in accordance with the company’s procedures.

As a Ships Operator, you could be employed by the actual ship owning company, or you may be employed by a company who contracts out this technical role to the shipping owner. A Ships Operator job is a very responsible position and you are often called upon to provide technical support within other areas of ship operations such as crew management, logistics related to operations, service and maintenance of the vessel.

What does a Ships Operator job description include?

  • The Ships Operator is in charge of a vessel or fleet of vessels and is involved with tasks such as post fixture, bunker intakes, crew management and agency appointments.
  • You will be required to prepare vessel position updates and then forwarding on.
  • The Ships Operator is responsible for ensuring the vessel’s voyage is performed efficiently and ensuring costs are kept to a minimum.
  • You will also be required to arrange and manage any advance payments from charterers and final settlements when the voyage is complete.
  • The Ships Operator is expected to coordinate the day-to-day operational activities, liaising with any external agents and Marine Technical Superintendents etc to ensure efficient commercial operation.
  • You will be expected to coordinate shipping requirements under Contracts of Affreightment. This will require identifying commercial opportunities. The Ships Operator is also required to assist with any commercial analysis, preparation of company operational and annual reports and Lay Time and Off-hire statements on completion of each voyage.
  • The Ships Operator liaises with Charterers and Owners with respect to vetting inspections in relation to ports to be visited.

Key skills and qualifications of a Ships Operator:

  • You will be expected to hold a degree or diploma in Nautical Sciences. You will also be required to hold a 2nd Mates FG MMD, 2nd Mates Certificate of Competency and other sailing qualifications as required by the employer.
  • As a Ships Operator you will be required to have significant experience in this role, some employers may be specific in their needs.
  • A Ships Operator must be a good communicator and have leadership/management skills.
  • The ability to make decisions under pressure as well as demonstrate excellent reasoning and analytical skills is essential.
  • You will be required to be able to operate industry standard computerised systems.
